Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, Holland
An extension of the Van Gogh’s museum Rietveld-wing, the Kurokawa-wing was built on Amsterdam’s ‘Museum-Square’. Stringent restrictions resulted in 75% of the volume built underground.
Sharing Rietveld’s geometric abstraction, the curvilinear design departs from Rietveld’s linear style incorporating Japanese abstract aesthetics and asymmetry.
Overcoming a complete project-gridlock, responsibilities started early 1995 with a complete re-design and negotiations with client, sponsoring Japan Foundation and international consultants. Leading and supervising the entire design-, detail-, tender-development and construction supervision until the hand-over & opening in 1999, subsequent consultancy resulted in the entire Museum’s re-organization and construction of a new entrance in 2015.
